Volunteer Story

I love my role in SNAP Cymru – it fits in with my busy life and keeps my brain ticking!    I work on the Helpline providing an independent and confidential service for families across Wales who phone us for advice and support.  Parents are often upset and frustrated and part of the calls are always about listening to their experience and helping them focus the outcome they want for them and their child.

It’s often about explaining information and systems and helping them understand their rights and options.   I know that my input can help them make more informed choices.  I often help parents prepare for meetings, deciding exactly what’s important for their child and important to their child.  Sometime this means helping people write letters to ensure they are representing their views accurately.

I have a real empathy for families having been through the system myself and understanding very much where the families come from.  I love continuing to learn and to use my brain – to keep it active!  I also have a particular passion for supporting young people with specific learning difficulties like Dyslexia and helping young people to follow their aspirations and talents and having the right support to help them achieve their potential!

I would recommend volunteering with SNAP to anyone.  I feel the Helpline role is perfect- its task and finish and focused but very flexible and fits in with all my other activities!
