Additional Learning Needs Overview – Looked After Children

This course helps professionals and foster carers feel more confident in supporting children and young people with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) who are looked after. It explains the challenges these children may face and how adults can support their learning, wellbeing, and inclusion.

The course helps learners understand key legislation and how it applies in everyday practice. It explores the ALN system and how it links with disability discrimination, helping learners understand children’s rights and promote inclusive support.

By the end of the course, learners will be able to:

  • Understand what Additional Learning Needs are and how they may affect looked after children and young people
  • Explain the roles and responsibilities of professionals and foster carers within the ALN system
  • Recognise the rights of children and young people under ALN and disability discrimination legislation
  • Identify barriers to learning and wellbeing and know how to challenge or reduce them
  • Support children and young people with ALN in an inclusive, child-centred way
  • Work collaboratively with education, health, and social care to improve outcomes
